For a while there, it was looking like déjà vu all over again, with Democratic hopes raised only to be dashed. But by golly, if the Dems didn’t snatch victory from the jaws of defeat to come back late in the evening of a nail-biting election day to take back the House of Representatives.

Novak Djokovic is back on top as world number one after an abdominal injury forced rival Rafael Nadal, the previous number one, to withdraw from the Rolex Paris Masters. Djokovic officially becomes number one on Monday, although he lost the Paris final to the latest tennis hotshot, Russia’s Karen Khachanov, 7-5, 6-4.
Normally, I’d be ecstatic with Nole’s return to top form. This time, though, I’m troubled.

The exhibition match, a year in the planning, was announced after the revelation of the murder of dissident journalist Jamal Khashoggi at Saudi hands in Istanbul, putting pressure on Nadal and Djokovic to withdraw.

After a month in which we have seen the grisly murder of Jamal Khashoggi, the terror of 14 pipe bombs sent to the Democratic leadership and CNN and the horror of the Tree of Life Synagogue massacre, we are once again turned in on ourselves to ask – what kind of world are we, what kind of leadership of that world is America providing?

The attempt to send crude pipe bombs to prominent Democrats and liberal-leaning CNN Wednesday was shocking but hardly surprising. It is the inevitable progression of an American society unhinged by divisiveness and incivility. And, predictably, the aftermath has not brought people together but set them squabbling about whether or not President Donald J. Trump can be blamed; who’s more uncivil, Democrats or Republicans; and the continuing whataboutism that relitigates past grievances.

The grisly murder of Jamal Khashoggi – for which the Saudis have now accepted responsibility (sort of) with some cockamamie blame-the-victim scenario – proves Benjamin Disraeli’s Macchiavellian dictum that there are no permanent friends or enemies, only permanent interests.
